Essential Question: What are some situations that we can describe as variable?
Big Idea: Observation and description of changes in the world around us are the first steps in finding and learning about patterns.
Problem 2.5 and Follow Up
A. What was Theo’s fastest recorded speed, and when did it occur?
Theo’s fastest speed was 20 miles per hour and it occurred after 85 minutes into the race.
B. What was Theo’s slowest recorded speed and when did it occur?
Theo’s slowest was 0 miles per hour and it occurred 3 times during the race at 0 min, 40 min, and 100 min.
C. Describe the changes in Theo’s speed during the race.
He started off at 0 mph and went up to 15 and then to 17.5 mph. Then back down to 15 and stayed there until 60 min. Where it went up to 17.5 again and down to 15 and up to 17.5 again and finally went up to 20 mph and then stopped.
D. The graph only shows Theo’s speed at 10-minute intervals; it doesn’t tell us what happened between 10-minute marks. See paths on pg. 25. Explain in writing what each connecting path would tell about Theo’s speed.
1. He is going at the same speed.
2. He starts fast and gradually slows down.
3. He starts slowly and gradually increases speed.
4. He didn’t move at all and then went fast.
5. He went fast and then stopped.
Follow Up
1. Would it be possible for the path to represent Theo’s progress between 10-minute marks? Why or why not?
No, because it doesn’t match any of the 10-minute intervals.
